Privacy notice
The Learning Forest is free learning for children, made by The Tree Fella NE Ltd. In Grow your times tables, children practise their times tables a few minutes a day and grow a forest as they learn. This notice covers the data it keeps. How does a tree work? needs no login and keeps no data.
If your child uses it at school
Your child's school decides to use The Learning Forest and is in charge of your child's data (the "controller"). We look after the data for the school and only use it to run the app (the "processor"). Questions about your child's data, or requests to see or delete it, go to the school first. We will help them.
If you made the account yourself
We are the controller for your account and your children's data. We use it only to run the app, because you asked us to (our legitimate interest in providing the service you signed up for).
What we keep
- The grown-up's email address and a scrambled (hashed) copy of their password.
- Your child's first name or nickname, as typed by the grown-up, and their username.
- Scrambled copies of your child's password, recovery code and QR code. In a class, the three pictures your child taps to log in.
- Your child's answers: each question, the answer, whether it was right and how long it took. This is how the app picks the next questions.
- Settings, such as the forest season.
- If you turn on a daily reminder: your device's notification address and the time you chose.
- Failed login attempts and the internet address they came from, for 24 hours, to stop people guessing passwords.
We never ask for surnames, dates of birth, photos or addresses. There are no adverts, no tracking and no analytics. Children can't message anyone.
Who else handles it
- Cloudflare hosts the app and the database. The database is in Western Europe.
- If you turn on reminders, your phone's push service (Apple, Google or Mozilla) passes on an empty message to wake the app. The reminder is written on your device.
We don't sell or share data with anyone else.
How long we keep it
Until the account, class or child is deleted. Teachers can delete a child, a whole class or their account at any time, and the data goes straight away. A child who hasn't played for 12 months is deleted automatically. Failed logins are deleted after 24 hours. Database backups are overwritten within 30 days.
Cookies
We only use the cookies needed to keep you logged in and to recognise a class device. There are no tracking or advertising cookies. The app also keeps a copy of your child's forest on the device so it opens without the internet; logging out removes it.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your child's data, or object to how it is used. For school accounts, ask the school. Otherwise email us at learn@thetreefella.co.uk.
If you're unhappy with how we've handled data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
